RULES AND COURSES OF FIRE FOR THE PRACTICAL SHOOTING, THREE GUN, AND SHOTGUN EVENTS FOR 2008

2008 THREE GUN MATCH

PLEASE NOTE THE AMMUNITION REQUIREMENTS BELOW

GUIDING BODIES: Florida Police & Fire Games

EVENTS: Competition is offered to men in the following categories: 18-29, 30-34, 35 – 39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60 & up. Competition is offered to women in an open category.

COMPETITION DURATION: Four to five hours.

GENERAL RULES:

The Course of Fire will be provided in advance either by the posting on web page or mailing out if requested. Courses of Fire or target placement may change from year to year.

Safety rules of the host range must be followed.

Cold Range: Competitors will transport all weapons to and from the line unloaded with the actions open and pointed in a safe direction. No firearm may be loaded until directed by the range staff.

Once the command to load has been given, and until the line has been declared safe, breaking the 180-degree rule with a firearm will result in disqualification from the match.

Firearms Allowed: Any factory pump or semi-automatic shotgun. Standard duty-type handguns and rifles. After-market scopes or electronic sights will not be allowed. Weapons that come from the factory equipped with optical sights, i.e., H&K G36, Steyr AUG, etc., will be allowed. All firearms are subject to inspection and approval by the event coordinator.

Ammunition Allowed: Factory or reloaded rifle ammo is allowed. No armor piercing, steel core rifle rounds. Factory or reloaded birdshot, #6 shot or smaller is required. No buckshot or shotgun slugs are permitted. Frangible handgun ammunition is required. No lead, jacketed or hollow point handgun ammunition is permitted.

Course of Fire: Two shooters will start at the firing line facing away from the targets, hands held in front of the body in the "interview", or similar position, with all weapons on the table pointed in a safe direction. The handgun will have a loaded chamber. The shotgun and rifle will start in cruiser ready condition (empty chamber, safety on and magazine loaded). At the start command, each shooter will turn and knock over a small steel popper target with their shooting hand. Shooters will then engage the rifle target with one hit. They will then engage the shotgun targets with their shotgun. Shooters will then engage the rifle target again with one hit. Shooters will then engage the handgun targets with their handgun. Shooters will finish the string with a final hit on the rifle target with their rifle. The first shooter to successfully engage all targets is the winner of the string. The string will be repeated with the first shooter to win two strings advancing.

Competitors will receive credit for any target that falls down and bounces back up.

Failure to knock over the small steel popper target on the table with the shooting hand prior to engaging the first target will default that string.

Competitors who shoot non-rifle targets with a rifle will be disqualified. They will also be responsible for damage to targets and any injury that might occur.

SPECIAL NOTES: When competitors have successfully engaged their handgun and shotgun targets, the shotgun and handgun actions must be locked open when returned to the table prior to re-engaging the rifle target. Safeties may be left on or off. Shotgun magazines need not be emptied nor pistol magazines removed. The rifle must have the safety engaged when on the table and not in use. Loss of that string will occur if the rifle safety is found to be disengaged when on the table. All weapons must be pointed in a safe direction at all times. Unsafe gun handling or breaking the 180-degree rule will result in disqualification. Shooters will not be allowed to fire unwanted rounds from the chamber to gain an advantage.

TARGETS: One steel rifle target, per shooter, placed at 35 – 40 yards. Three to four steel plates per shooter for shotgun, placed at 12 – 15 yards. Three to four steel plates per shooter for handgun, placed at 10 – 12 yards. Actual number and placement of targets may depend on the range facilities.

Safety rules of the host range must be followed.

Cold Range: Competitors will transport all weapons to and from the line unloaded and holstered or cased. No firearm may be loaded until directed by the range staff.

Once the command to load has been given, and until the line has been declared safe, breaking the 180-degree rule with a firearm will result in disqualification from the match.

Firearms Allowed: Any stock, duty-type pistol or revolver is permitted. Grips may be changed to facilitate the size of the shooter’s hand. Minimum 38sp/9mmP caliber is required. BARREL LENGTH IS LIMITED TO 5 INCHES OR LESS, NO EXCEPTIONS. All firearms are subject to inspection and approval by the event coordinator.

Holsters: Duty rigs must be full duty rigs, suitable for use while in uniform. A concealed rig must be worn at waist level, concealed by an outer garment. ALL HOLSTERS MUST HAVE A COVERED TRIGGER GUARD. HOLSTERS WHICH PERMIT A FINGER TO BE PLACED ON THE TRIGGER WHEN THE FIREARM IS HOLSTERED WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. Course of Fire: Two shooters will start at the firing line facing away from the targets, hands held in front of the body in the "interview", or similar position, handguns holstered. Prior to the start command, the range officer will reveal a small steel popper plate painted to correspond with one of the painted targets. At the start command, each shooter will turn and knock over a small steel popper target with their shooting hand. The shooter may then draw and engage the target painted the same color as the painted popper target revealed by the range officer. The remaining targets may then be engaged in any order but the cross-over stop target must be the last target to be engaged. The first shooter to successfully engage all targets is the winner of the string. The string will be repeated with the first shooter to win two strings advancing.

Competitors will receive credit for any target that falls down and bounces back up.

Failure to knock over the small steel popper target on the table with the shooting hand prior to drawing the firearm will result in a default of that string of fire. Failure to engage the correct first target will result in default of that string of fire.

TARGETS: Three to four steel plates per shooter, each painted a different color, placed at 10 – 12 yards. One Cross-over stop target, placed at 12 – 15 yards. Actual number and placement of targets may depend on the range facilities.
